Spending a week on San Juan Island is magical no matter what, but having so many Southern Resident Killer Whales here is extra amazing. Today the Jpod joined up with the Kpod, eventually making it along the west side of the island in the evening.
They passed Lime Kiln State Park going north, then immediately turned south and some of them came in VERY close to shore right at the lighthouse.
This one has a kelp flag hanging from its dorsal fin, and is exactly the stuff that dreams are made of.

I acknowledge that I live and operate on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present, and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe. Without their history, I would not be enjoying our natural landscapes, seascapes, and wildlife as I do. In honor of their past and present, I choose to pay a monthly rent to the Duwamish Tribe via www.realrentduwamish.org.
